Which online store should you choose? SaaS, Open Source, WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Magento?
Hi! If you are wondering which online store will be best for you - you are in the right place. In this post I will go through the available options, their pros and cons, and suggest which model works best depending on your needs and budget. Let's not waste time - let's get started!
Online store - SaaS or Open Source?
The first step in choosing an e-commerce platform is defining your budget and your level of technical skill. There are two main models:
- ✅ SaaS (Software as a Service) - ready-made online stores in a subscription model, e.g. Shoper, IAI or Shopify.
- ✅ Open Source - self-hosted stores such as WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Magento, which give you more freedom but require more commitment.
Each of these solutions has its pluses and minuses, so let's take a closer look.
An online store in the SaaS model
How does SaaS work?
In the SaaS model, the service provider handles hosting, technical support and software updates. The store runs in the cloud and you pay a monthly subscription. Personally - I do not recommend this solution, especially for the SME sector. We have to remember that we will never own such a store. An example of this model is Shoper, but also other companies that build dedicated systems.
Advantages of SaaS
✔ Quick setup - the store is ready to run within hours.
✔ Technical support - the provider handles updates and help.
✔ No coding required - perfect for people without technical knowledge.
Disadvantages of SaaS
❌ High costs in the long run - a monthly subscription plus extra fees for features.
❌ Limited customization options - access to the code and server is heavily restricted.
❌ Costly modifications - developers often charge €46 - 100 net per hour of work.
Who is SaaS for? For people who want to launch a store quickly without digging into the technical side. But above all - for large companies. If you have doubts - call me and I will elaborate: 519109063
An online store in the Open Source model
WooCommerce - the flexibility of WordPress
WooCommerce is one of the most popular Open Source solutions, running as a WordPress plugin. It is perfect for people who want to combine a store with a blog and value full control over their site. My golden piece of advice: it works well, but for small stores of up to around 100 SKUs (products). When scaling your business, WooCommerce will not meet your expectations.
The worst thing you can do on top of that is use Elementor, which generates an enormous amount of code (DOM) in the page source, resulting in unstable site performance.
Get yourself good, fast hosting, e.g. from LH:

Advantages of WooCommerce
✔ Free platform - no software fees.
✔ Full control over the store - freedom to edit the code, server and database.
✔ A wide choice of plugins and themes - easy customization.
✔ SEO-friendly - ideal for anyone who wants to build organic traffic.
Disadvantages of WooCommerce
❌ Requires configuration and hosting management - you have to take care of the server, backups and security.
❌ A bit more complex to run than SaaS - requires basic technical knowledge. It is easy to use, of course, but if you want to modify it you need to know a few programming languages, including HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript.
Who is WooCommerce for? For people who want full control over their store while using the easy-to-manage WordPress. Not recommended for large companies and stores.
PrestaShop - for beginner sellers, but with a real store this time
PrestaShop is a great solution for small and medium-sized businesses. It is free, has an intuitive interface and plenty of ready-made modules. Of course there are also paid modules, which you certainly will not manage without.
Advantages of PrestaShop
✔ Easy to use - an intuitive admin panel.
✔ Free and paid modules - room to grow your store.
✔ No subscriptions - the only costs are the domain, hosting and SSL certificate.
Disadvantages of PrestaShop
❌ Slower than WooCommerce - requires good hosting. -> e.g. LH.pl
❌ Problematic upgrades - migrating from version 1.6 to 1.7 can be difficult, and to 8.2 nearly unachievable.
Who is PrestaShop for? For small and medium-sized stores that want to start selling online without high costs. And for people and companies thinking about scaling their business.
Magento - best for large businesses
Magento, acquired by Adobe, is the most advanced e-commerce platform. Perfect for large stores that need advanced functionality. From experience I can say that Magento is one of the best engines in the world.
Advantages of Magento
✔ The most extensive e-commerce system in the world.
✔ Support for multiple stores at once (multistore).
✔ Excellent SEO and analytics tools.
Disadvantages of Magento
❌ High server requirements - runs well only on powerful hosting.
❌ Advanced operation - requires specialist development knowledge and hiring a DevOps engineer
❌ Very high developer costs - rates from €52 to €165 net per hour of work.
Who is Magento for? For large companies with a budget for developing and maintaining their store. Examples include Zalando and eobuwie.
Dropshipping - a store without a warehouse
Don't want to invest in a warehouse? Dropshipping is a model where you sell products without having to store them.
How does it work?
1️⃣ You create an online store (e.g. on WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Magento).
2️⃣ You partner with a wholesaler who stores and ships the goods.
3️⃣ The customer orders from you, and the wholesaler handles the shipping.
Advantages of dropshipping
✔ No need to warehouse goods.
✔ Lower costs of running the store.
✔ The ability to sell many products without investing in stock.
Disadvantages of dropshipping
❌ No control over product quality.
❌ Longer order fulfillment times.
❌ Problems with unique content - wholesalers provide the same descriptions and photos.
Who is dropshipping for? For people who want to start selling online without much capital.
